Several scholars regard the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 as V event in world politics because it provided the impetus for the development of the modern nation-state. In this international state system, individual political communities with bordered territories are placed under the authority of a centralized government.1 Each state recognizes the sovereignty of the other states and refrains from interfering in their domestic affairs. Hence, territoriality and sovereignty are the critical components of the state system. While the state system has proved to be more stable than the systems that preceded it, it also has certain pitfalls that warrant closer consideration. This essay will explore the benefits and challenges of the international state system. It will establish that the state system has contributed to human flourishing but has rendered individuals in many nation-states vulnerable to human rights violations by the states.
