The academic discipline of international relations (IR) has historically been the stranglehold of the West. However, with the proliferation of IR programs and departments in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, the relevance of traditional IR theories has come under scrutiny. Furthermore, the traditional theoretical frameworks are ineffective in dealing with the crises of the contemporary world, such as international terrorism, the environment, and new patterns of war and peace. Therefore, if international relations (IR) is to be made truly emancipatory, it has to become more critical of traditional theories and accommodate more voices that have been historically marginalized. This essay will explore the extent to which European and Western perspectives dominate IR theory. It will also suggest ways in which the discipline could be modified to help deal effectively with issues such as environmental degradation and climate change.
