When people are asked about their personal identity, they tend to tell their name,
age, gender, ethnicity, or race first, since they are most societally fixed and easily discernible by others. When asked to fill out a survey, for instance, individuals typically respond to demographic questions faster than to those that probe deeper ideas or attitudes. These features are so natural and ingrained in society that people become oblivious to the fact that those qualities are products of social construction and maintenance. Examining those social and cultural indicators gives a deeper understanding of how various groups of individuals are identified in society and the challenges that arise from having one or more distinct identities. The feminist
perspective holds that gender is a salient characteristic that causes social and political division among people, much like race does.
