Conflict theory emphasizes that conflict is the driving force of social development, and unlike functionalism, which values stability and harmony, disorder or disharmony is inevitable to humans and is viewed as a natural phenomenon. It is assumed that human nature is evil, and therefore, in natural state, humans tend to maximize their own profits and minimize the profits of others. Therefore, there is inevitably a conflict between groups trying to occupying scarce resources such as wealth and power in society, and the social order is maintained by forcing the powerful ruling groups of society to force the powerless groups.
